Maritime Certification Specialist
Position Overview
Are you detail-oriented with a passion for the maritime industry?
Do you excel in fostering relationships with colleagues and clients alike?
Are you dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service?
Would you describe yourself as a self-motivated individual who thrives in a dynamic environment?
If so, we invite you to consider the role of Certification Officer at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
The MCA is responsible for executing the UK government's maritime safety policies, aiming to prevent loss of life and environmental pollution at sea.
Our mission is clear: Safer lives. Safer Ships. Cleaner Seas.
We aspire to be a leading organization in sustainable shipping, prioritizing safety and environmental stewardship in all our endeavors.
We are committed to creating a workplace where every employee feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. Our inclusive culture is supported by various staff networks, including those focused on gender, race, mental well-being, and more.
Role Responsibilities
Your position will be within the Seafarer Operations team, part of the UK Customer Maritime Services Directorate. This team is dedicated to the certification and endorsement of seafarers, which is essential for their ability to work at sea.
In this role, you will provide exemplary customer service while evaluating applications from seafarers for marine examinations and the issuance of Certificates of Competency or Flag State Endorsements. This is a client-facing position where you will offer guidance and support to applicants and current certificate holders.
Your duties will include:
- Reviewing application documents such as training records, sea time, and medical certificates to determine eligibility.
- Issuing appropriate Certificates or Endorsements to qualified seafarers.
- Communicating with applicants to clarify any additional information needed.
- Ensuring compliance with seafarer training standards and maintaining the integrity of the certification process.
- Assisting with administrative tasks and supporting other teams as necessary.
This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to begin their careers within the MCA or the Civil Service. Comprehensive training will be provided to help you develop into a skilled Certification Officer, and prior maritime experience is not required—just a commitment to delivering high-quality service.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a flexible approach and a strong desire to learn. You should possess excellent organizational and time management skills, enabling you to handle a variety of tasks within set deadlines. Attention to detail is crucial, as is a commitment to maintaining high standards in your work.
Experience in a customer service environment is essential, with a focus on providing outstanding service through various communication channels. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to convey information clearly and professionally.
Proficiency in IT, particularly with Microsoft Office applications, is expected. You should be capable of multitasking and proactively enhancing your skills to support the organization's objectives.
About the Operational Delivery Profession (ODP)
The ODP represents a diverse community within the Civil Service, encompassing all public-facing roles and those supporting public service delivery.
Benefits
As part of the Civil Service, you will enjoy a range of benefits, including generous annual leave, attractive pension options, flexible working arrangements, and a supportive work environment that promotes a healthy work-life balance.
