We are looking to recruit an Instructor in Public and Protective Services for various levels, ranging from introductory courses to advanced A-level equivalents. This opportunity encompasses two available positions. Ideal candidates may have experience in the Uniformed Public/Protective Services, including but not limited to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Paramedics, Customs and Excise, and Security. Alternatively, individuals who have collaborated closely with the public/protective services sector through research or partnerships are also encouraged to apply.

This role provides a unique opportunity to grow as an instructor in Public and Protective Services, supported by a dedicated team of Programme Leaders who oversee departmental offerings. Responsibilities will include the preparation and delivery of engaging lectures tailored for our diverse learners, alongside administrative tasks, assessment, and verification practices associated with these responsibilities. We advocate for the use of practical and interactive teaching methodologies to enhance the learning experience. Your professional knowledge and experience will be invaluable in delivering a curriculum that fosters a comprehensive understanding of the Public and Protective Services sector.

Key Responsibilities:

A: Assessing Learner Needs

  • Provide prospective students with relevant advice and guidance.
  • Evaluate learners' prior experiences and achievements in relation to the designated learning programme.
  • Conduct interviews and administer necessary selection assessments.
  • Perform initial assessments to identify any special learning or support needs.
  • Ensure learners are properly registered with the institution and relevant awarding bodies.

B: Planning and Preparing Teaching and Learning Programmes

  • Identify learning outcomes and develop Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans in accordance with awarding body standards and institutional guidelines.
  • Integrate literacy and numeracy/essential skills into the learning programme as necessary.
  • Plan for the linguistic needs of the student cohort, facilitating the use of their preferred language (Welsh or English) whenever feasible.
  • Select diverse learning methods to accommodate student needs.

C: Managing the Learning Process

  • Establish and maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching techniques to promote individual learning and experiential learning.
  • Create and utilize appropriate learning materials, incorporating information learning technology where applicable.
  • Identify and address issues of poor motivation and inappropriate behavior.
  • Set challenging tasks and establish individual goals and targets with learners as needed.
  • Structure sessions to maintain engagement and interest.
  • Encourage effective communication among all learners, using relevant technology.
  • Foster strong working relationships within programme teams.
  • Establish and maintain connections with external organizations as required.
  • Coordinate and supervise work experience placements for learners, following established procedures.
  • Adhere to institutional management information systems, ensuring timely communication of necessary information to colleagues.
  • Contribute to quality assurance systems and participate in self-assessment processes.

D: Providing Learner Support

  • Assist in designing induction procedures and effectively induct learners into the organization.
  • Ensure learners are aware of and have access to appropriate support services.
  • Maintain tutorial systems in line with institutional guidelines.
  • Offer advice, guidance, and academic support, directing learners to additional resources as appropriate.

E: Assessing Learning Outcomes and Achievements

  • Develop assessment strategies for learning programmes in line with awarding body requirements.
  • Employ a variety of assessment methods to ensure fair and reliable evaluations.
  • Provide learners with clear and constructive feedback within an appropriate timeframe.
  • Maintain assessment records and share relevant information with stakeholders.

F: Reflecting on and Evaluating Performance

  • Assess personal practice in relation to learner and programme needs.
  • Utilize feedback from quality assurance systems to enhance personal practice.
  • Stay updated on developments within your specialist field.
  • Engage in the institutional Performance Review system to evaluate personal performance and identify development needs.
  • Participate in relevant continuous professional development activities.

G: Additional Responsibilities

  • Assume roles such as Personal Tutor, Programme Leader, Internal Verifier, or Curriculum Coordinator as agreed.
  • Oversee examinations or assessments as necessary.

H: General Responsibilities

  • Comply with the institution's Safety, Health & Environment Policy to maintain a safe working and learning environment.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as required by management.
