Job Title: Welding Supervisor

MacTaggart Scott is seeking a skilled Welding Supervisor to join our team in the Welding department.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all welding operations are carried out in accordance with the production schedule, meeting targets for delivery, cost, and quality. This role will also oversee pre-fabrication and inspection checks, ensuring compliance with approved company procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and delegate work in line with operations planning schedules to meet customer requirements and project timelines.
  • Supervise production processes, ensuring compliance with work-to-list/customer schedule, engineering drawings, and best practice guidance, while maintaining health and safety, COSHH, and quality regulations.
  • Ensure all equipment in the department is calibrated and functioning correctly.
  • Requisition supplies, such as gas, plate, consumables, and welding wire, within agreed budget for the department.
  • Liaise and communicate with other departments to build strong working relationships across the business.
  • Ensure work is completed within estimated timescales and collaborate with operations planning to assist with accurate time estimation for different finishing processes.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, promoting good housekeeping and wearing of PPE.
  • Responsible for training needs analysis and developing departmental plans to ensure appropriate skill levels and flexibility within the department.
  • Continuously look for ways to improve processes and problem-solve to achieve goals and meet department targets.
  • Undertake and complete any other duties as necessary within the department.

Pre-Weld Checks:

  • Review all relevant documentation, including applicable standards, code for visual acceptance requirements, drawings, quality control procedures, process/QC inspection plans, WPS requirements, welder qualification, and consumable checks.
  • Verify parent materials, dimensions, and condition, as well as preheating method and temperature.
  • Check fit and set-up, ensuring no undue stress is applied to the joint, and verify the environment for cross-contamination.
  • Verify welding equipment and calibration.

During Weld:

  • Check WPS parameter compliance and correct heat input.
  • Ensure compliance with welding processes/WPS.
  • Verify correct technique, run sequence, and check runout lengths, time-lapses, cleaning between passes, inter-pass temperatures, dimensional accuracy, and consumable control.
  • Oversee weld records.

Post-Weld:

  • Post-cleaning and visual inspection of completed welded joints.
  • Check weld contour and width, review PWHT, and verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Review weld records and conduct NDT in accordance with specifications.

Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in dealing with internal customers and departments.
  • Methodical and organized work ethic to prioritize work, set, and meet deadlines on a weekly basis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office.
