An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Safety and Compliance Specialist to join our Hs2 team. Candidates should possess a background in Construction or Civil Engineering.

The Safety and Compliance Specialist will be tasked with overseeing and executing the Company's Health, Safety, and Environmental Management systems across various sites.

This role involves implementing and monitoring strategies that foster advancements in the safety management system. We seek a collaborative team player and problem solver who will engage with project delivery teams in a proactive manner.

Effective communication skills are essential, as the Specialist will interact daily with Client H&S teams and management, as well as our direct workforce and supply chain.

This position is regional, covering a diverse range of construction projects within the Birmingham and Hs2 Trace area. A full UK driving licence is required, as travel between sites is necessary.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a vital member of the Project Delivery team, contributing to the achievement of accident and incident-free projects.
  • Provide guidance to contract and site personnel regarding risk assessments, method statements, task-specific briefings, Site Health & Safety Plans, and general safety matters.
  • Lead Project-level monthly HSEQ Forward Planning meetings, conduct monthly HSEQ Audits and inspections, and ensure the resolution of non-conformances. Engage with staff and workforce during projects.
  • Represent the Company at Safety meetings with Clients and Sub-Contractors. Participate in Project Pre-Start Meetings and Sub-Contractor Pre-Start Meetings.
  • Conduct accident investigations and prepare reports in collaboration with the Project Delivery Team, ensuring that improvement actions are identified and implemented. Produce relevant Safety Bulletins for company-wide distribution.
  • Communicate safety initiatives, notices, and alerts to staff and workforce.
  • Liaise with the HSQE Director or Head of Health and Safety, producing monthly Project summaries and assisting in Group procedure reviews. Attend weekly HSEQ review meetings.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of in-house safety training programs and presentations.
  • Disseminate information regarding changes in technology, work methods, or statutory requirements through safety bulletins and internal safety procedures applicable to the Company.
  • Stay informed about client H&S Standards and Specifications, ensuring their implementation at the project level.
  • Develop strategies to meet targets and promote best practices, ensuring compliance with HSE legislation.
  • Undertake additional duties commensurate with the level of this position.
  • Adhere to Company policies and procedures.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Previous experience in Civil Engineering or construction projects, including areas such as drainage, groundworks, structures, temporary works, reinforced concrete, earthworks, and lifting operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of statutory H&S and Environmental Regulations.
  • Understanding of Client Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements.
  • Familiarity with CDM 2015 – Roles and Responsibilities.

Skills:

  • Proficient in IT.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to enhance safety culture and raise awareness.
  • Proactively lead and manage HSE Management policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Capability to train and develop staff, enhancing their understanding and skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with clients, contract, and site staff to improve performance and minimize non-conformances on site.

Qualifications:

  • NEBOSH Qualification (general & construction) or equivalent.
  • IOSH Membership.
