Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Reading Specialist Tutor to join our team at Novus, a leading provider of education services in prison settings. As a Reading Specialist Tutor, you will play a critical role in supporting emergent readers and driving the prison's reading strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and support emergent readers through regular phonics-based lessons and other reading initiatives.
  • Proactively drive the prison's wider reading strategy through activities such as reading groups, delivering training sessions, and working in partnership with the library, education, and workshops.
  • Develop and implement effective reading programs to meet the needs of prisoners with varying literacy levels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to reading education.
  • Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to monitor progress and adjust instruction as needed.

Requirements

  • Teaching Qualification - PGCE or Cert Ed
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • At least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Track record of effective reading teaching, including the use of phonics
  • Knowledge of the benefits of reading and a passion for helping others to experience them
  • Experience of supporting emergent readers, learners with LDD needs, and a willingness to work with those with ESOL requirements
  • Able to undertake occasional travel across sites
