Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Biomedical Scientist with a strong background in Microbiology to lead our team within the Microbiology Department at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

As the Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor, you will oversee and manage specific sections of the laboratory, collaborating with a passionate team that values professional growth and development. Candidates must be State Registered with the HCPC and possess either an MSc with a Microbiology Specialism or an IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Microbiology. A proven track record in continuing professional development (CPD) and substantial experience in diagnostic microbiology and serology within a healthcare environment is essential.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading and managing a section of the Microbiology laboratory.
  • Providing guidance and supervision to Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, and Healthcare Science Assistants.
  • Ensuring the delivery of precise and timely laboratory test results.
  • Acting as a deputy for Operational Managers and other Microbiology Team Managers as required.
  • Exemplifying compassionate and inclusive leadership to foster a collaborative leadership culture within the organization.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • MSc with Microbiology Specialism or equivalent, or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Microbiology.
  • Leadership or Management qualification.
  • IBMS approved BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • State Registration with the Health Care Professions Council.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Extensive post-registration experience in microbiology.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Health & Safety legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Specialized knowledge in microbiology.

Desirable:

  • Experience with virology techniques.

Essential:

  • Strong ability to communicate technical information effectively across all levels of staff.
