About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at Tokamak Energy, a leading global commercial fusion energy company. As a key member of our design team, you will be responsible for designing mechanical components and assemblies, working closely with stakeholders and subject matter experts to deliver optimized solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies using CAD/CAE software, ensuring clear communication of design intent, manufacturing requirements, and operator information.
  • Contribute to or lead the delivery of mechanical designs and support engineering activities across business projects and programs.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and industry standards.
  • Participate in design reviews, ensuring follow-up actions are completed and design improvements are implemented.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to support requirement definition, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Conduct analysis and simulations to ensure the suitability, performance, and reliability of mechanical designs.
  • Work closely with suppliers and technicians to optimize design, resolve issues, and deliver items to service.
  • Select the most appropriate materials and manufacturing technologies for design, including advanced and developing techniques.
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory frameworks, including PED requirements, pressure vessel design codes, and design of lifting equipment.
  • Ensure safety is considered in all aspects of engineering design.
Requirements
  • HNC/D or degree-level qualification in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of 3D CAD, PLM systems, data management, and revision control.
  • Previous experience of complex design projects with good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform design calculations and analysis using engineering software.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Awareness of electromagnetic principles and their mechanical implications in high-current systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to form solid working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Adaptability to change, with the ability to deliver against business priorities.

  • Work in hot or cold environments.
  • Driving on company business.

  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields.
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH).
  • Operating heavy equipment, including forklifts and overhead gantry cranes.
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business.
