London, Greater London, United Kingdom Animal and Plant Health Agency Full time

Position Overview

Are you seeking a dynamic career that offers both variety and flexibility in your daily responsibilities?

Do you aspire to play a crucial role in maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare while safeguarding the nation from exotic notifiable diseases? Many of the skills and competencies you have gained in previous veterinary roles will be highly applicable and valued in positions within the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Consider exploring a new veterinary pathway that can lead to significant impacts on animal welfare.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) operates as an executive agency under the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, serving the interests of the Scottish and Welsh Governments. Our diverse workforce of over 3,000 dedicated professionals collaborates to provide research, guidance, and support to the UK Government, ensuring the protection of animal, public, and plant health for the benefit of the environment and economy.

As a member of the Animal Sciences team, you will collaborate with a group of specialized veterinary surgeons, bioveterinary scientists, and animal technicians within the Department of Pathology and Animal Sciences. Your responsibilities will include leading the live animal phases of infectious disease research and statutory disease surveillance, ensuring adherence to Home Office regulations, providing expert advice on animal welfare and treatment as the Named Veterinary Surgeon, and managing specialized staff and facilities within APHA.

This role presents an excellent opportunity for career advancement for individuals passionate about animal science. We offer a range of training opportunities to support your professional growth at APHA. We seek candidates who are enthusiastic about working with animals and promoting their welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Leadership in Animal Science: Contribute to the welfare of various animals used in research, enhance animal science capabilities, and engage in policy-relevant research across diverse disease portfolios.
  • Named Veterinary Surgeon Duties: Provide guidance on the implementation of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act, ensuring veterinary care for experimental animals and maintaining adequate veterinary cover.
  • Management of Staff and Facilities: Oversee the functional management of staff in animal facilities, ensuring compliance with biosecurity and Home Office regulations.
  • Specialization Development: Develop expertise as a veterinary specialist concerning the species and infectious organisms in your area of responsibility.
  • Ethics and Welfare Review: Actively participate in the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body, contributing to project license applications and protocol reviews.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, delivering training and presentations while contributing to scientific reports and publications.
  • Financial Management: Involve in budget planning and resource management to ensure effective use of resources.
  • Safety Protocols: Lead safety inspections and audits, ensuring adequate training for emergency scenarios.
  • Quality Assurance: Stay updated on relevant legislation impacting quality issues and contribute to departmental inspections and audits.

Candidate Profile:

Experience and Skills:

  • Clinical experience with small or food animal species or experimental models is essential.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills are required.

Qualifications:

A degree in Veterinary Medicine is mandatory, along with registration or eligibility for RCVS (MRCVS is essential).

Benefits: In addition to a competitive salary, APHA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a generous pension scheme, ongoing personal development opportunities, and a supportive work environment.

Join us in shaping the future of animal health and welfare at APHA.
