Lead Quality Assurance Engineer

to become part of our team dedicated to a better future. This is a permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Quality Assurance Engineer at Wärtsilä Defence Solution Ltd, you will deliver technical support services throughout the organization to conduct thorough product testing and assessment. You will engage in rapid customer developments within the exciting and dynamic maritime industry and become a vital member of our team.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate with passionate colleagues and engage in a variety of projects across our global maritime and land-based clientele. Your role will be crucial in delivering high-quality engineering products across our product range. You will enhance customer value through improved testing and verification engineering processes throughout the product lifecycle and beyond.
The Lead Quality Assurance Engineer will collaborate with the Test Manager to ensure the delivery of superior testing for our products. You will provide guidance and direction to Test Engineers and support other departments and vendors.
In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the quality and reliability of our products through the design, development, and execution of comprehensive testing programs. Ultimately, you will validate the product's functionality, performance, scalability, and reliability.
You will create and implement test plans for product evaluation, ensuring thorough coverage of all specifications and use cases. You will support and mentor other test engineers, offering technical guidance and fostering a culture of high performance, innovation, and excellence.
Additionally, you will collaborate with the Engineering Department and other teams to comprehend product requirements and design suitable test programs. You will implement and maintain testing frameworks and tools to optimize testing processes and drive continuous improvement in testing methodologies, processes, and tools.

As a Lead Quality Assurance Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

Collaborating with project leads to capture relevant testing requirements from product design specifications and drawings, and participating in regular project review meetings. Developing test plans that detail rig allocation, scheduling, and additional rig hardware requirements in a timely manner. Designing test hardware, such as adaptor plates and test shafts. Quoting and raising orders for rig interface hardware. Creating and reviewing risk assessments with project leads to ensure the test program adheres to safe operating limits and aligns with Wärtsilä QEHS standards. Assembling test rigs, monitoring rig operations (through data acquisition), and conducting product inspections at designated test intervals. Managing the testing of external products at OEMs, equipment suppliers, and third-party testing facilities. Producing final test reports that detail the test program, test data, conclusions, and relevant recommendations for future testing endeavors. Presenting findings where appropriate. Proactively ensuring compliance with Wärtsilä QEHS requirements and advocating for a 5S culture. Actively participating in training and mentoring initiatives for others, supporting less experienced colleagues. Assisting in maintaining compliance with classification society standards, including ISO14001 and ISO9001. Supporting the development of the testing facility into a global center of excellence.

To excel in this role, we expect you to possess:

A proven background with a minimum of 5 years in a Test Engineering environment, ideally with mechanical seal assemblies. A Degree or preferably a Master's in a relevant Engineering discipline. Experience as a self-sufficient Senior Engineer, requiring minimal supervision. A quick starter who can effectively function in their new role from the outset. The ability to interpret design drawings and utilize CAD software for designing test hardware. Comfort with relevant Mechanical Engineering calculations. Strong technical knowledge, particularly within the Marine industry, is desirable, especially regarding classification societies and IMO compliance standards. Demonstrated ability to utilize test monitoring software tools such as LabVIEW, Tetrascience, and enVigil. Extensive experience in setting up instrumentation and data capture equipment, such as thermocouples, LVDT sensors, and tachometers. Excellent communication skills to collaborate with project leads in developing testing requirements. Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive team player who supports colleagues. Proficient report writing skills with a keen attention to detail. A demonstrated understanding of commercial considerations. Willingness to undertake occasional travel.
