About the Role

The Surgical Specialist Pharmacist will play a crucial part in the team managing services at Weston General Hospital, within the wider University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). This role requires a highly skilled and experienced pharmacist to maintain and develop clinical pharmacy services to the Surgical Division, including pre-op clinics, theatres, and other medical wards at Weston General Hospital.

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop clinical pharmacy services to the Surgical Division, including pre-op clinics, theatres, and other medical wards at Weston General Hospital.
  • Liaise with senior pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff to promote safe and effective use of medicines within the Surgical division.
  • Provide information and support to the Surgical Division on drug usage and expenditure, and work with senior clinicians to maximise clinical effectiveness of medicines used and minimise cost.
  • Develop a robust medicines-related audit programme with senior clinicians in the directorate.
  • Participate in the training of pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, undergraduate pharmacists, and other pharmacy and NHS staff.

Person Specification

  • Masters degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy.
  • Postgraduate certificate (or equivalent) in Clinical Pharmacy, or currently working towards attaining.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Computer literacy, including Pharmacy applications.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Evidence of UK hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Previous experience of audit or quality improvement.
  • Experience of one-to-one and small group teaching.
  • Knowledge of the legal framework for the dispensing, prescribing, and administration of medicine.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate multiple clinical digital systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem identification and solving.
  • Prioritisation and task management.
  • Ability to critically analyse prescriptions for clinical appropriateness.
  • Can organise own and others' work to meet agreed deadlines.
  • Ability to make safe and clinically relevant decisions in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to manage a small team of junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on a daily basis.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and audit.
