Senior Art Recovery Researcher

Sotheby's is a leading global art and luxury business. We promote access to and ownership of exceptional art and luxury objects through auctions and buy-now channels.

About the Role
  • Lead the international art recovery team to review artworks offered for sale at Sotheby's worldwide created prior to 1945 to minimize the risk of displacement due to WWII persecution.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant lawyers, researchers, and government bodies in the art recovery field.
  • Represent Sotheby's and its art recovery research as an ambassador and presenter at global events, conferences, and lectures.
  • Organize Sotheby's hosted art recovery events and educational seminars.
  • Proactively source business opportunities and minimize the risk of offering for sale an artwork that was looted or displaced between 1933 and 1948.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the research function of the Art Recovery department, driving best practice.
  • Provide diligent research and support for Sotheby's worldwide on WWII era provenance issues.
  • Facilitate a global training program for expert employees on company policies with regard to WWII era provenance research.
  • Collaborate with business development teams and cataloguers to vet and research artworks.
  • Work directly with clients and their advisors on prospective sales, appraisals, and gifts.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in art recovery and provenance research and business development.
  • Senior, ambassadorial role requiring an art recovery and legal background with connections in the art recovery field and client management skills.
  • Language skills (fluency in German and/or French).
  • Proven research, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Leadership skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Legal and/or Art History qualification required.
  • Ability to travel internationally frequently.
