We are at a crucial juncture in our development as we implement Trafford Council's significant investment initiative in leisure services. This forward-thinking program aims to revitalize our leisure centers into modern, accessible, and inspiring environments under the new branding of 'move', ensuring a legacy for future generations. Our success is driven by a collaborative philosophy, working closely with the Council, stakeholders in sports and health, and the diverse community and voluntary sectors to achieve the objectives outlined in Trafford's Sport and Physical Activity Strategy, known as the Trafford Moving Strategy.

Trafford Leisure is fully dedicated to upholding the highest standards of governance. To this end, we have devised a comprehensive two-year plan to ensure compliance with all regulations pertaining to a Tier Three Sport England organization.

The current term of our Chair, Andy Worthington OBE, will conclude soon after an impressive nine years of continuous service on the Trafford Leisure Board. Consequently, we are in search of a new Chair who will guide the Board, nurture relationships with Trafford Council and other essential stakeholders, and collaborate closely with our CEO and executive team to ensure the realization of our vision, operational effectiveness, and robust governance across this Community Interest Company (CIC).

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about the vision of Trafford Leisure. The ideal Chair will be an independent and strategic thinker, adept at leading and inspiring others through transitional phases. With a cooperative mindset, you will possess a profound understanding of effective governance, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate complex environments. High levels of integrity, ethical standards, and a strong grasp of corporate governance are essential. Experience in executive or non-executive roles within a similar sector or organization is preferred. The Chair will serve as a distinguished communicator and representative for Trafford Leisure, fostering relationships and advocating for our mission.

Responsibilities of the Chair:

  • Conduct quarterly Board meetings
  • Oversee annual performance evaluations of Directors (up to 12)
  • Facilitate the annual performance review of the CEO and provide support
  • Participate in development days (two half days per year)
  • Attend ad hoc events and strategy partnership meetings with Trafford Council (when feasible)

The minimum commitment for this role is three years, with the possibility of extending to a maximum of nine years through two additional three-year terms. The Chair position requires an estimated commitment of approximately one day per month.

This is a voluntary role, and Trafford Leisure will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred while fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. The Chair, along with other Non-Executive Directors, will also receive a complimentary membership to all Trafford Leisure facilities, providing significant savings annually.
