The Athletic is a digital sports media company dedicated to providing in-depth coverage and immersive storytelling for passionate sports fans. We connect fans with athletes, teams, and leagues through a global network of creators and journalists.

About the Role

We are seeking a talented Senior Designer to join our Editorial Design & Visuals team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for visual journalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This role reports to the Design Manager, Editorial.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the newsroom to enhance articles, social media content, newsletters, and audio experiences with custom artwork and templates.
  • Create bespoke hero images for stories and social posts using photos, typography, and vector elements.
  • Maintain and audit a library of editorial and social templates, developing new ones as needed.
  • Commission freelance illustrators to create original artwork for podcasts.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years of design experience in a newsroom or related industry.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.).
  • Excellent time management skills to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Data visualization and/or motion design skills are a plus.
