Cardiff, Cardiff, United Kingdom St John Ambulance Cymru Full time

Position Overview

We are in search of a seasoned finance executive to lead our Finance and Resources Committee (FRC). This role encompasses primary oversight of all fiscal responsibilities, as well as management of the investment portfolio and strategic planning for our entire property assets.

With substantial annual cash flows generated from our extensive network of volunteers across numerous divisions, this position demands a skilled and experienced leader as we navigate the concluding phases of our organizational transformation and finalize our long-term strategy.

In addition to participating in quarterly Board meetings, you will chair the FRC, which convenes online with similar frequency. Board Members are responsible for establishing the overall direction of the organization while offering insights and constructive feedback.

Serving as a Trustee and Committee Chair presents a unique opportunity to enhance your leadership capabilities and explore new avenues for personal growth while contributing to the strategic direction of a global organization with a rich history and a vast volunteer base.

Main Responsibilities

Our organization has ambitious objectives, and we are seeking trustees to join our board to assist, support, and guide us on our journey. We are looking for strong advocates for the charity who can help steer us toward achieving our strategic goals.

We invite applications from all interested individuals for this prestigious opportunity to help govern the charity. Key areas of expertise we seek include:

  • Financial Acumen: A fully qualified accountant with senior-level experience and robust analytical skills, capable of interpreting and scrutinizing financial reports and advising the board on the charity's financial performance and risk profile.

About Our Organization

Since our inception, we have been dedicated to supporting individuals and communities. We have collaborated closely with healthcare services, enhancing our capacity and developing innovative approaches to alleviate pressure on frontline services. Our organization plays a vital role in community resilience, ensuring that individuals are trained in first aid to make a difference in critical situations.

We offer opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to volunteer with us, fostering personal skill development and confidence while contributing to our charitable and income-generating initiatives.

We are currently undergoing a significant modernization program, preparing for our future strategy, which includes a comprehensive review of our services, financial models, and workforce structures, all aimed at enhancing our organizational culture and overall experience.

Trustee Responsibilities

  • Ensure the organization pursues its stated objectives as defined in our governing documents by developing and agreeing on a long-term strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with governing documents, charity law, company law, and other relevant regulations.
  • Ensure resources are applied exclusively to further our charitable objectives.
  • Safeguard the reputation and values of the organization.
  • Define goals and evaluate performance against established targets.
  • Ensure effective administration, including appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the financial stability of the organization.
  • Protect and manage the charity's assets and ensure proper investment of funds.
  • Oversee the appointment and support of the Chief Executive.

Commitment

  • Prepare for and attend quarterly in-person Board meetings.
  • Participate in the organization's Annual General Meeting.
  • Engage actively in at least one of the Board's Standing Committees, which meet quarterly.
  • Support organizational events throughout the year.
  • Be responsive to communications and available for ad hoc assistance as needed.
  • Utilize specific skills and expertise to assist the Board in making informed decisions.

Qualifications

Essential: Fully qualified accountant.

Desirable: Experience in the charitable sector and senior leadership roles.
