Job Title: Principal Engineer - Cables and Accessories

As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for managing a team of specialist technical engineers who lead the front-end of engineering design and standards to steer the approval of assets and materials for use in our Licence areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of specialist professional cable engineers, providing clear technical, commercial, and regulatory advice and guidance.
  • Prepare technical specifications and installation guidance documents in relation to Transmission and Distribution cables and accessories.
  • Support Purchasing and business stakeholders through tender processes, to ensure that cable assets and materials are secured on Frameworks, to allow our Licence areas to deliver their regulatory investment plans in line with NetZero targets.
  • Approve safe, reliable, quality, innovative, and sustainable solutions through specifications, in order to increase competition and mitigate supply chain risks.
  • Ensure that Approved Equipment Registers are up to date.
  • Liaise with Project Managers in the Licence areas, to ensure that selected Factory Acceptance Tests are attended timely.
  • Having expert technical knowledge in relation to existing and new cable assets, ensure that the H&S team (Processes and Procedures) and Network Planning and Regulation (Policies and Maintenance Procedures) are updated as required.
  • Ensure that outputs from the department meet deadlines and align with business priorities, industry processes, and initiatives, project milestones, and delivery timescales of Licence requirements and investment projects.
  • Carry out fault investigations, prepare reports, and communicate the findings and approved repair solutions across the business at a senior level.
  • Contribute to industry working groups (e.g. ENA) and ensure that industry codes and standards are drafted to the highest standards, while also representing business interests.
  • Identify and support process improvements either within the Engineering Design and Standards team or across the wider business.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of Electrical Industry policies, procedures, and working practices.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • Expert technical knowledge in relation to Transmission and Distribution Cables and accessories.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and numerical skills, capable of effectively analysing supplier technical reports and data sheets.
  • Computer literacy – e.g., Microsoft Office suite, SAP.
  • Strong understanding of the energy industry, investment delivery challenges, with an understanding of manufacturers and distributors in the Global Marketplace.
