The Nuclear Medicine service at University Hospitals Birmingham is a specialized diagnostic and therapeutic service based across four sites. The case mix is highly specialized, and this is reflected in the range of investigations and treatments provided.
The Training Lead role will be vital in overseeing training provided to the clinical team and supporting apprentices' and trainee staff members.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required- Facilitating training within specialities
- Supervision of training clinical staff ensuring provision of effective and efficient training systems
- Liaison with the management team to ensure clinical staff have the ability and resources to carry out training opportunities
- Acting as the clinical staff representative in strategic planning and department performance review
- Initiating and organizing audits
- Creating the roster to align with the training needs of the staff across all four sites
- BSc Hons Clinical Technology (nuclear medicine), Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
- Developed highly, specialist knowledge and experience across a range of work procedures (MSc level)
- Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent level of knowledge
- Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD)
- Registered Clinical Technologist / Diagnostic Radiographer
- Student assessment qualification (Level 3)
- Significant diagnostic Nuclear Medicine Experience
- Specialist experience in functional imaging
- Experience of dispensing and administering diagnostic and therapy Radiopharmaceuticals
- Experience delivering training, supervising students, mentoring and assessing
- Expected to carry out specialist procedures with highly complex equipment, adapting protocols where necessary
- Experience of working within a quality management system
- Have a working knowledge of a range of specialist practice
- Evidence of direct involvement with the technical support for a clinical nuclear medicine department
- Possess a developed specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of nuclear medicine imaging and non-imaging procedures and analysis
- Able to perform a full range of diagnostic test procedures on patients of all ages including paediatric
- Possess specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of radiopharmacy with the ability to dispense and administer intravenous radiopharmaceuticals
- Able to devise, write and implement investigational protocols and procedures
- Knowledge of the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging, non-imaging and related equipment
- Has knowledge of the NHS working environment within the field of nuclear medicine / PET
- Demonstrates a specialist theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the hazards posed by and the precautions required when dealing with ionising radiation arising from sealed and unsealed radioactive diagnostic and therapeutic sources and patients
- Has a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge of radiation protection issues and radioactive decontamination
- Has a developed understanding of patient, staff and public risks arising from radiation exposure
- Has a high level of knowledge of radiation protection and legislation relating to nuclear medicine
- Experience of working within a quality management system including the ability to take part in the development of a quality system
- Demonstrates significant experience of providing and delivering teaching, training and assessment of junior staff
- Able to manipulate scientific data
- Able to use highly developed analytical, interpretation and judgemental skills to make decisions outside written protocols
- Able to critically analyse patient data and make judgements and decisions on format of investigation procedure
- Able to identify normal and abnormal findings on a wide range of investigations
- Use analytical and judgemental skills when manipulating and analysing diagnostic imaging and non-imaging patient data for a full range of nuclear medicine investigations

- Able to show empathy and understanding towards patients of all ages undergoing lengthy investigations; and also, to their relatives/carers
- Able to deal with emergency medical crises including cardiac arrests
