Job Summary:

We are looking for a senior technical expert to lead our research and development efforts in Optics and Quantum. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality research, generating proposals, and managing novel research projects that deliver business value and contribute to our goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Domain expert responsible for delivering world-class research within our Network Infrastructure research programme.
  • Accountable for generating proposals and managing novel research projects that deliver business value and contribute to our goals.
  • Responsible for intellectual property creation and helping others develop skills in this area.
  • Manages collaborative research projects or other research collaborations as appropriate.
  • Supervises professionals, graduates, and post-graduate student placements and secondments.
  • Research reputation: mandatory.
  • Horizon scanning: detects early signs of potentially important developments through a systematic examination of potential threats and opportunities, with emphasis on new technology and network strategy. (Mandatory)
  • Story-telling with data: strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to business audiences. (Mandatory)
  • Business acumen: knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organizational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases). (Preferred)

Requirements:

  • Technical domain expert with 10+ years of working experience in the Optics and/or Quantum technology domains. (Mandatory)
  • A thought leader on present and future optical networks with a strong appreciation of BT's architecture.
  • Proven ability to conduct techno-economic assessments of new concepts and their BT network impact.
  • Able to file new IPR naturally as it emerges in the candidate's research.
  • Able to autonomously lead large-scale research projects, including internal and external collaborations. Evidence of significant business impact through delivery of research. (Mandatory)
  • Stakeholder management: evidence of managing project stakeholders across the business at a variety of grade and seniority levels. Demonstrate ability to build internal and external relationships, collaborating both operationally and technically to deliver business results. (Mandatory)
  • Commercial Applicability: understanding the business case principles around relevant innovations and the real value to the business through value proposition build. (Mandatory)
