As a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you will be responsible for leading technical direction, developing and driving best practices, and enabling teams to solve their hardest problems. You will work closely with customer-focused agile squads, product managers, architects, and engineers to define the next iteration of NatWest Boxed.
Key Responsibilities- Technical Leadership: Establish and apply widely agreed software engineering principles and methodologies to design, develop, test, and maintain applications and services to achieve business and technology goals within required budgets and timelines.
- Engineering Strategy: Support the creation and implementation of engineering strategy and roadmaps across the business and within your mission.
- Technical Design: Support squads within your mission with technical design, ensuring that they meet current and future business needs.
- Quality and Resilience: Inject expertise to ensure high-quality solutions that are highly resilient and provide the best possible product experience for our customers.
- Chapter Leadership: Provide leadership of a Chapter and ensure technical priorities are clear and effectively communicated.
To be successful in this role, you will need a strong background in software engineering, software design, and architecture, as well as extensive experience in developing software in a SOA or micro-services paradigm. You should also have proven technical leadership experience for one or more teams and a background of implementing best practice, especially around scalability, availability, and performance.
You will also need:
- A track-record of proactively identifying and solving business problems with your team.
- Ability to effectively deliver value when faced with ambiguous problems.
- Ability to act as a subject matter expert and communicate with clarity and empathy to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understanding of how to translate business objectives into data-driven insights that can be leveraged by a team to produce better outcomes.
- Expert-level practical and theoretical knowledge of Java software development and substantial experience of message-driven architectures.
