About the Role

The Pharmacy Technician Lead will play a key role in providing medicines management services to our inpatient mental health teams at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

Main Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with senior pharmacists and technicians to develop and implement effective medicines management systems.
  • Develop, implement, update and monitor relevant pharmacy and trust policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the review and modernisation of pharmacy services by identifying opportunities for pharmacy technicians.
  • Contribute to the development of pharmacy technical services through Pharmacy Technician meetings.
  • Implement the Medicines Optimisation model for technicians at community level.
  • Work in close liaison with the dispensary.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of pharmacy standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor and supervise the work of pharmacy assistants and technicians in medication top-up at community level.
  • Monitor medicines storage at team bases and outside units in line with Medicines Management standards.
  • Assist with departmental and Trust wide quality audits to demonstrate compliance with Medicines Management policies.
  • Provide general supervision and appraisal of pharmacy assistants and technicians.
  • Supervise the internal training scheme for pharmacy assistants/student technicians.
  • Dispense medication, including clinical trials, for in-, out-, day- and hostel patients.
  • Participate in the medication supply and topping-up service at team base level.
  • Participate in the receipt, processing, storage and stock control of medicines and other supplies.
  • Counsel patients attending the Community Teams and pharmacy department on the use of their medication.
  • Maintain Accredited Checking Technician status and perform the final accuracy check of prescriptions.
  • Respond to enquiries and requests from staff, patients and carers.
  • Assist in the induction of new staff and in-house training.
  • Use pharmacy and other computer systems in the course of performing these duties.
  • Deputise for the Principal Medicines Optimisation Technician and the Chief Technician when required.
Management Responsibilities
  • Manage pharmacy technicians working under the clinical team.
  • Identify the training needs of technical staff and support their development.
  • Ensure trust policies on recruitment, sickness absence, equal opportunities and Health and Safety are followed.
  • Participate in the recruitment of staff.
  • Monitor and prepare regular reports detailing the pharmacy workload and medicines expenditure.
  • Manage the day-to-day workload of inpatient and outpatient clinical technician services.
  • Re-supply medicines in accordance with agreed stock lists and non-stock items.
  • Ensure the accurate charging of medicines to teams.
  • Participate in procurement of pharmaceuticals as required.
Research and Development
  • Undertake data collection for medicines management audits within the Trust.
  • Write reports for medicines management audits within the Trust.
  • Assist with the implementation of clinical trials as undertaken by the pharmacy department.
Training and Development
  • Undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy.
  • Contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal.
  • Undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP).
  • Undertake CPD as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Prepare, update and conduct a mental health pharmacy induction programme on medicines management aspects of community based technical services.
Person Specification

Essential:

  • ONVQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3, or similar nationally recognised qualification in pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Basic general education.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
  • Management Training course or significant equivalent experience.
  • AIMMs or equivalent accreditations.
  • Accreditation as an accuracy checking technician Practice Supervisor.

Desirable:

  • Educational Supervisor.
  • Medication counselling Training (LPET).
  • Full and current UK driver's license.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Significant UK Hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Experience of education and training of pharmacy staff.
  • Experience working within mental health services.
  • Experience of liaison within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience of dealing with disciplinary matters Management skills recruitment / appraisal / training/ leadership / motivation / sickness absence.
