We are seeking a highly skilled Design Manager to join our team at Walter Lilly, a premier provider of construction and maintenance services. As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the design process to deliver technically compliant, cost-efficient, and coordinated design packages during both the pre-construction and project delivery stages.
Key Responsibilities:- Design Management: Prepare and manage on-time design information release, oversee the timely production and approval of technical drawings, and chair design workshops.
- Design Coordination: Coordinate complex design packages, validate and interrogate design details, and add value to the construction process.
- Technical Support: Provide expert guidance and technical support, working closely with clients and project teams to identify and mitigate risks, as well as ensuring compliance with all statutory, legal, and planning requirements.
- Quality Assurance: Prepare, implement, and update trackers to monitor the quality, compliance, timely production, and progress of consultants and subcontractor design at all project stages.
- Best Practice: Follow best practice principles through all project stages, undertake design assurance and buildability reviews, and ensure designing deliverables are met and that alignment with commercial strategy is always maintained.
- Risk Management: Monitor risk, convert opportunities, and record, and assess the impact of change on the project.
- Subcontractor Management: Review the selection and scope of suitable subcontractors for specialist design packages.
- Documentation: Ensure accurate and comprehensive records are maintained, manage the production of handover manuals, and work with document controllers in the setup and management of the project's common data environment.
- Sample and Mock-up Production: Oversee sample, mock-up, and control sample production and approval, including occasional supplier visits and material selection trips.
To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- A proven background of experience in managing the design process on complex projects.
- Experience with managing Design and Build or Contractor Design Portions.
- Able to attend projects in Central London with occasional travel outside.
- An appetite for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- A track record of successfully managing people and process.
- A deep understanding of planning procedures, building regulations, listed building consents, CDM Regulations, and other third-party requirements.
- Knowledge of the commonly used provisions of the Standard Forms of Contract.
- The ability to robustly interpret and interrogate drawings and technical specifications.
- High attention to detail and quality.
- Excellent time management and problem-solving ability.
- Understanding of software such as Viewpoint, Revit, BIM Collab, or Navisworks.
- A relevant professional qualification or working towards (MCIOB, RIBA, RICS).
- An appropriate CSCS card.
- A full valid driving license (desirable).
- A construction-related degree (desirable).
