SSA Recruitment UK is looking for a passionate and skilled Design Manager to lead the management of design and technical teams for a significant highways enhancement project.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid background in either the design or construction of civil engineering infrastructure within the highways domain, alongside a robust understanding of engineering principles and their applications.

Experience in the design and/or construction of temporary works is highly desirable, as is progress towards Chartership, although this is not a mandatory requirement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing both permanent and temporary works designs for ongoing projects and bids.
  • Directing the design process with an emphasis on feasibility and efficiency to achieve optimal solutions.
  • Developing a schedule for design deliverables in collaboration with the design team.
  • Coordinating with tender and project teams to ensure design alignment with project expectations.
  • Establishing and agreeing upon a design program with each designer.
  • Integrating the design program into the overall project timeline.
  • Regularly meeting with designers to monitor design progression.
  • Tracking design and work progress, updating the program as needed.
  • Ensuring design management adheres to relevant quality standards.
  • Fulfilling Principal Designer responsibilities for pre-construction activities in compliance with CDM Regulations.
  • Providing necessary design input for tender submissions.
  • Engaging with clients, designers, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Offering technical guidance and support for live projects and tenders.
  • Contributing to various project programs, including tender, design, construction, and variations.
  • Coordinating the design of temporary works and related elements.
  • Reviewing design drawings and addressing technical queries as needed.
  • Incorporating construction methodology into the program where applicable.
  • Managing information flow from the design team and informing the project team of any impacts on progress.
  • Providing essential information to the Procurement Department for material and subcontractor procurement.
  • Preparing necessary handover documentation.
  • Implementing improvements and innovations where suitable.
