Job Description Summary

As an Electrical Design Engineer at Dowty Propellers, you will be part of a multi-disciplined team of engineers responsible for supporting the business in meeting customer requirements, quality, timescales, and cost. Your projects will include R&D, new applications, and in-service product support.

Dowty Propellers is a leading global provider of electrical power, integrated avionics, and mechanical systems, including aerospace propeller systems. We supply advanced propeller systems to regional airliners, military transport utility aircraft, and are a world leader in the design and manufacture of carbon fibre composites blades and electronic propeller control systems.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and review Interface Controls Documents for the propeller control system and/or propeller De-Icing system.
  2. Develop and review Electrical/Electronic requirements for the propeller control system and propeller De-Icing system.
  3. Provide electrical technical oversight of suppliers of sensors/effectors to Dowty.
  4. Provide electrical/electronic technical oversight of suppliers of Avionic boxes to Dowty.
  5. Develop and review DO-160 qualification test procedures and reports for Dowty products, including support to qualification testing (EMI/HIRF/Environmental).
  6. Provide electrical support to Dowty's in-service products.
  7. Lead research and development activities for new technology electrical items within the propeller system.
  8. Provide electrical/electronic support to the wider controls team research and development activities for new technology for propeller control systems and propeller De-Icing systems.
  9. Provide customer support for electrical/electronic Propeller system elements, including support to Engine Testing and Aircraft Testing.
  10. Act as a Certification Verification Engineer for electrical/electronic propeller system elements.
  11. Accountable for the effective delivery of the Electrical Engineering activities within required timescales and budgets.
Essential Characteristics
  1. Degree in Electronics and/or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent knowledge, with significant experience in engineering for safety-critical electrical and electronic products.
  2. In-depth experience of owning and leading electrical design elements for aerospace systems.
  3. Previous design and/or experience in aviation electrical systems or a similar highly regulated industry.
  4. Good problem-solving and solution-building skills.
  5. Understanding of generic system design philosophy and lifecycle from concept through to commissioning.
  6. Capabilities and limitations of avionics communication busses.
  7. EMI/HIRF in a propeller environment and implication for propeller control systems and de-icing.
  8. Power distribution in de-icing and propeller systems.
  9. Electrical interfaces between sensors, effectors, and control units.
  10. Motion and displacement sensing technologies.
  11. Electric motors, controllers, and associated modelling.
  12. Electronic control for hydraulic systems.
  13. Direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes.
  14. Electrical and electronic design for safety-critical systems. Experience of applying a Systems engineering approach to integrated aircraft systems (e.g., a mix mechanical components and electro-hydraulic control systems).
