Job Title: Principal Instrumentation Engineer – Metrology

Location: Barrow-In-Furness

Salary: Competitive

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform high-level calibration and repair of Mechanical TMDE, including technical investigations and review of non-conformances with specialist support.
  2. Develop and maintain calibration procedures and measurement uncertainty budgets.
  3. Deliver targeted on-the-job training to apprentices, interns, and placements.
  4. Participate in UKAS audits and achieve UKAS signatory status.
  5. Communicate effectively with technical stakeholders on instrumentation and calibration topics, including consultation on new measurement technologies.
Requirements:

Essential:

  1. Extensive experience in a precision metrology laboratory environment.
  2. Strong understanding of quality systems and standards (ISO 9001, ISO 17025).
  3. Relevant academic qualification (STEM Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent).

Desirable:

  1. Existing UKAS signatory status for Mechanical Calibration.
  2. Experience in creating measurement uncertainty budgets to ISO 17025 level.
  3. Experience in using automation software (Fluke Metcal, Met/Track, Met/Teams, Labview).
  4. Experience in other calibration parameters (Dimensional, Temperature, Electrical).

About the Instrumentation Team:

You will calibrate and repair mechanical test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) in a controlled environment, as well as designing and maintaining calibration procedures and measurement uncertainty budgets. The calibration department currently supports 30,000 pieces of equipment per year, ranging from traditional analogue equipment through to state-of-the-art digital systems.
