The British Academy – the national institution for the humanities and social sciences in the UK – is looking for a Senior Environmental Policy Consultant to enhance our public policy division. This role focuses on spearheading the creation and execution of policy initiatives that emphasize environmentally sensitive approaches and Sustainable Futures.


Role Overview

The public policy team at The British Academy addresses a variety of societal challenges that the SHAPE disciplines (Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts for People and the Economy/Environment) can illuminate and redefine.

We collaborate closely with our esteemed Fellows, who are recognized leaders in diverse fields, alongside a broad network of academics, specialists, practitioners, and crucially, policymakers.

Our methodology is both forward-thinking and historically informed, ensuring that we remain evidence-driven in our approach.

We apply rigorous academic standards while effectively communicating insights to foster the development of improved policies and processes in policymaking.


Candidate Profile

This position is ideal for an individual with a solid background in environmental policy, whether from academic, policy, or practical perspectives, and who is adept at navigating multiple policy domains.

Our Senior Policy Consultants are eager to learn and leverage a broad spectrum of insights from SHAPE disciplines to enhance policy and policymaking.

You will oversee one of our key programs and contribute to our collective efforts in crafting new initiatives.

Your role will involve utilizing our extensive networks to gather evidence and insights that provide fresh perspectives on policy challenges.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential to convey messages effectively to diverse audiences.

A typical day may involve participating in discussions with leading experts, preparing briefings for senior management, coordinating event invitations, resolving research contract issues, and reviewing recent governmental publications.

While you will often work autonomously, you will be part of a collaborative, supportive, and friendly team of 12, operating on principles of mutual trust and accountability, each focusing on interconnected areas to achieve shared objectives.
