About the Job

We are seeking a skilled Gardener to join our team at the City of Birmingham. As a Gardener, you will be responsible for maintaining the beauty and health of our parks and gardens.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and treat plant problems using chemical treatments and other methods.
  • Apply fertilizers, insecticides, and other chemicals to maintain plant health.
  • Maintain the appearance of assigned work areas by removing debris, mowing, edging, and completing other lawn care tasks.
  • Plant and care for flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants by digging holes, laying mulch, watering, and trimming/pruning.
  • Prep soil/beds for planting by removing weeds, tilling, plowing, or turning soil, installing sprinkler systems, aerating soil, and leveling beds.
Requirements
  • Driver's license.
  • Paid work experience caring for and maintaining plants and landscapes.
  • Paid work experience mixing/applying chemicals to treat plant problems.
  • Ability to obtain an Alabama Pesticide Applicator's License (custodial or supervisory) within 90 days of being appointed to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Alabama Pesticide Applicator's License (custodial or supervisory).
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture (or related field) obtained from an accredited university.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as tractors, bobcat, front-end loaders, and forklifts.
Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings such as gardens and greenhouses year-round.

Physical Demands

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of moderate activity such as digging holes, loading/unloading materials, or extended standing.
