Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Automotive Technician to join our team at the City of Birmingham. As an Automotive Technician, you will be responsible for performing journeyman-level tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, garbage packers, and other standard and specialized gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect equipment to determine the need for maintenance and/or repair work
  • Perform repairs on heavy trucks, including electrical repairs and air brake system maintenance
  • Provide guidance and assistance to less experienced employees
  • Plan and carry out work duties in accordance with instructions, policies, and accepted practice
  • Use independent judgment to determine the method of repair needed to complete assigned tasks

Requirements:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire
  • Completion of coursework/certification program or gained work experience in areas such as diagnosing problems with diesel engines, performing repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, and inspecting and repairing steering and suspension

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities, involving the use of electrical, gas, or air-powered tools and equipment. Work may be conducted in cramped work spaces, requiring extended periods in contorted body positions, and exposure to contaminants such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals.

Physical Demands:

Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion, including lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs, and the ability to read small numbers and letters on meters.
