Key Responsibilities: As a Research Associate, you will be at the cutting edge of energy systems modelling, developing and applying advanced models within various frameworks such as TIMES, OSeMOSYS, and MUSE. Your work will have a direct impact on high-stakes projects aimed at providing essential insights to help nations navigate their climate strategies.

Collaboration and Travel: You will collaborate with an exceptional team and have opportunities for international travel, particularly across Europe, to work with partner countries. Your contributions to modelling frameworks and data development will enhance your career prospects in this dynamic field.

Engagement with Stakeholders: In this role, you will liaise closely with renowned project teams, government representatives from partner countries, and international organizations. Your strong quantitative, software development, communication, and project management skills will be vital in delivering impactful energy system design insights and tools.

Modelling Development: You will take charge of the development and application of energy systems modelling tools, collaborating with countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Kenya, Zambia, Ghana, India, Malawi, and Nepal to create tailored modelling solutions that address their specific needs while contributing to groundbreaking research.

Academic Contributions: As part of the research team led by Professor Hawkes, you will also support various academic activities, including the supervision of MSc and MEng students, communication efforts, and other initiatives. Publishing your research in high-impact journals and building a professional network will be integral to your role.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field related to energy systems modelling, or nearing completion with the requisite skills and expertise.
  • Experience in structured software development, utilizing recognized tools and workflows such as Git/GitHub, alongside coding skills in languages like Python, GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), SQL, GAMS, or Rust.
  • Proficiency in energy systems modelling, with a background in building and applying models aimed at future technology deployment for climate change mitigation.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage and foster relationships with collaborators.
  • A proven track record of publishing impactful research articles in esteemed journals.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative research environment, contributing effectively to both individual and team projects.

Contract Details: The position is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, with a contract duration of 12 months initially, subject to research funding and potential extension.
