Health & Safety Advisor

Job Purpose
To provide expert advice, guidance, and support to managers and staff within the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) to ensure they effectively fulfill their Health & Fire Safety responsibilities. This role will operate in accordance with relevant legislation, SPS policies, and procedures.
Responsibilities- Conduct comprehensive compliance monitoring and reviews of the SPS Safety Management System (SMS) and Health & Fire Safety (HFS) Policies.
- Provide the Governor-in-Charge (GIC), Senior Management Teams (SMT), and the Health & Safety Committee (HSC) with detailed compliance data relating to the HFS SMS.
- Offer guidance and support to managers in conducting thorough and sufficient Health & Safety Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) aligned with the SPS SMS and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation.
- Coordinate local arrangements for accident investigation and reporting, adhering to the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences (RIDDOR) Regulations and SPS Policy.
- Carry out thorough investigations into Fire Incidents and False Alarms, compiling comprehensive reports.
- Conduct suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment Reviews / Alteration Notices in accordance with the SPS Fire Safety Manual.
The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) recruitment and selection process is based on the fundamental principles of our Competencies for Success Framework. This framework identifies essential behaviours and standards expected from both applicants seeking to join us and our staff in their respective roles.
Assessment of specific behaviours, which number eight, will be determined by the role you are applying for. While it is unlikely that you will be assessed on all of them, your performance will be evaluated based on those identified as crucial to this particular role.
Qualification Requirements- Must hold a NEBOSH General Certificate and demonstrate a willingness to pursue the NVQ level 5/6 qualification or equivalent NEBOSH National Diploma, with the intention of completing it within a specified timeframe.
- Attained NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of current Health & Fire Safety legislative requirements within a large and diverse working environment.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to adapt your style to ensure clear understanding across all levels.
- Exhibit a strong understanding of relevant Health & Safety Processes and Procedures.
