Position Overview
Ramboll is pleased to announce an opportunity for a Rail Systems Technician Apprentice within our Rail Systems Team. This role involves supporting the team in providing design services for Rail Systems across various projects. You will receive comprehensive support to attain a Level 4 qualification in Rail Engineering, typically through a day release format, laying a strong foundation for a rewarding career.
Apprenticeship Details
The academic program spans 4 years, with all costs covered by Ramboll through the Apprenticeship Levy.
Qualifications Achieved
- Level 4 Rail Engineering Apprenticeship
- Eligibility for registration as an Engineering Technician with relevant Professional Engineering Institutions upon completion.
Career Advancement
Upon finishing the Apprenticeship, there may be opportunities for further career development within Rail Systems, either as a Technician or through additional educational pathways.
Course Structure
The Apprenticeship will be delivered with a typical schedule of 4 days of work and 1 day of study each week, in collaboration with The Educationwise Academy. This will include a mix of lectures, laboratory work, tutorials, workshops, practical sessions, and online activities, along with independent research.
As you approach the end of your apprenticeship, you will undertake an End Point Assessment to demonstrate your acquired knowledge, skills, and behaviors.

Join Our Rail Systems Team
As a Rail Systems Technician Apprentice, you will be part of a dynamic and rapidly growing team. You will collaborate with a group of experts who value mutual respect and work towards shared objectives, utilizing advanced technology in the design of ground and related structures. You will receive on-the-job training and mentorship from seasoned professionals in the industry.
Your Responsibilities
- Apply engineering principles to railway signalling design, maintenance, and construction, both domestically and internationally.
- Understand and adhere to safe working practices, regulations, and risk management protocols.
- Design and develop engineering solutions, taking into account potential failure modes.
- Effectively manage engineering projects using project management methodologies.
- Gain insights into the commercial aspects and evolution of the railway sector.
- Acquire knowledge of the railway system and its components.
- Work towards obtaining an IRSE Signalling Designer's licence under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Conduct complex analyses using computer modeling and interpret technical documentation.
- Develop digital tools and methodologies to enhance project outcomes.
- Translate intricate engineering concepts into clear presentations, reports, sketches, and infographics for clients and stakeholders.
- Recognize the significance of third-party requirements and operational interfaces.
- Identify potential health, safety, design, sustainability, and commercial risks and contribute to their mitigation.
- Monitor design implementation throughout the project lifecycle, from initial concepts to construction and operation.
- Participate in the development of company procedures through active involvement in task groups.
- Pursue continuous professional development, including working towards corporate membership or chartership with a recognized institution.
- Collaborate with the Transport team and other disciplines nationally and internationally to deliver projects.

- Adhere to policies related to health and safety, quality, and environmental standards.

- Have achieved or be on track to achieve 3 A Levels or equivalent, including maths at grade C or higher.
- Possess 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or higher.

- Exhibit the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Show strong technological skills; CAD knowledge is desirable but not mandatory.
