Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Band 5 Healthcare Support Worker to become a vital member of our team within the medical day unit and outpatient department.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to assist the nursing staff in delivering exceptional care in an outpatient and day unit ambulatory care environment. The ideal candidate will possess experience in oncology nursing, demonstrating proficiency in SACT administration, venepuncture, and cannulation, while also being capable of mentoring others in these essential skills.
Key Responsibilities
- To plan, document, deliver, and assess evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient manner, in collaboration with the shift coordinator.
- To enhance understanding of the needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment and the various modalities utilized within the unit.
- To gain insight into the responsibilities associated with managing a shift under the guidance of the Ward Sister or Charge Nurse.
Detailed Responsibilities
These tasks will be performed under the supervision of the shift coordinator:
- Conduct initial assessments of patients' needs to understand their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural requirements, fostering a supportive environment for patients and their families.
- Assist in educating patients in preparation for treatments, investigations, and home care.
- Maintain awareness of potential side effects from ongoing treatments and adopt a proactive approach to mitigate adverse reactions.
- Participate in the direct provision of specialized nursing care under supervision until competency is achieved, including wound care, drain removal, and urinary catheter insertion.
- Develop familiarity with protocols for patients participating in clinical trials.

Education and Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Current professional registration.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable Criteria
- Qualification in oncology or a relevant diploma or degree-level study.
- Recognized teaching qualification.
Experience
Essential Criteria
- Experience in administering intravenous medications.
- Post-registration nursing experience in oncology or a related specialty, demonstrating confidence and competence in required skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in chemotherapy administration.
- Experience in clinical management.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- Knowledge of clinical trials management.
Skills and Abilities
