About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Animal Technician to join our team at The Pirbright Institute. As an Animal Technician, you will play a crucial role in the daily care and welfare of experimental animals housed within our facilities.

Your primary responsibilities will include providing essential support to the overall Institute objectives by undertaking the daily care and welfare of experimental animals. This will involve feeding, cleaning, watering, and health monitoring of animals, as well as handling and restraint of animal species for the collection of samples and other welfare procedures.

You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with the main provisions of ASPA, helping to ensure animals are housed under the requirements of the law. Additionally, you will be required to hold a Home Office personal License (PIL cat A&B) under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (as amended ASPA) and carry out regulated procedures in compliance with ASPA following suitable training, supervision, and competence assessment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care and welfare of experimental animals
  • Ensure compliance with ASPA and relevant bio-safety legislation
  • Handle and restrain animal species for sample collection and welfare procedures
  • Hold a Home Office personal License (PIL cat A&B)
  • Carry out regulated procedures in compliance with ASPA
  • Contribute to the production and development of departmental documentation and processes
  • Assist with training activities within the Animal Services department
