About the Role
The NIHR Intellectual Property Unit is seeking a highly skilled Senior Intellectual Property Manager to join its team. As a key member of the unit, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that NIHR-funded intellectual property is identified, managed, and translated into impactful outcomes that improve the quality, capacity, and capability of healthcare in the UK and overseas.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Head of IP and Commercial and other members of the IP Unit to develop and implement the NIHR's IP policy.
- Provide expert advice and support to NIHR staff members on IP-related queries, including running regular IP Open Sessions to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Manage a portfolio of commercialisation cases on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care to maximise return on investment on NIHR-funded IP, with a focus on delivering patient benefit and mitigating state aid.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of robust contractual terms for funding health research, ensuring alignment with NIHR's strategic objectives.
- Provide IP training to NIHR programme managers and staff at NIHR-funded organisations, promoting a culture of IP awareness and best practice.
- Utilise the IP Unit's established project management tools to manage allocated activities, ensuring efficient and effective delivery.
- Identify and implement improvements to the IP Unit's processes and systems, driving continuous improvement and excellence.
Requirements
- A good degree in a relevant subject, or comparable professional experience, with a strong understanding of life science research and intellectual property management.
- Expert knowledge of best practice in intellectual property management in the public and private sectors, with a proven track record of generating impact from research.
- Understanding of the different organisational goals of universities, NHS Trusts, charities, and companies, and the ability to balance these when negotiating with organisations.
- Knowledge of the regulatory framework for intellectual property management, with a proven ability to obtain appropriate legal advice on IP management issues.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior stakeholders and manage complex projects.
- Effective planning, organisational, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage own time to deliver multiple priorities with demanding deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and customer focus, including successful senior-level external liaison and meeting management to agree mutually acceptable outcomes.
- Effective negotiation skills and an understanding of technology transfer licensing arrangements.
