London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

Are you interested in engaging with critical Defence matters and contributing significantly to the national security of the United Kingdom? The Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives (Level 6) Degree Apprenticeship program offers a unique opportunity for you.

Founded in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) is dedicated to providing nuclear capabilities that deter threats and safeguard our nation.

The DNO manages all defence nuclear operations (excluding direct operations) and is tasked with ensuring nuclear deterrence; sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (comprising all organizations, programs, and personnel that maintain the UK's nuclear deterrent); and advising on UK nuclear policy, planning, and international collaboration on nuclear issues.

The UK's independent nuclear deterrent has been in place for over six decades, aimed at deterring the most severe threats to our national security and that of our NATO allies. To maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent, we are developing four new nuclear-armed submarines, known as the Dreadnought Class, and updating our nuclear warheads. These renewal initiatives will leverage cutting-edge technology and serve as a testament to British industrial excellence.

At DNO, we firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not only ethical imperatives but also vital for a successful and dynamic organization. We recognize that diverse teams bring a wealth of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, leading to enhanced decision-making, creativity, and innovation. We foster a culture where differences are celebrated, and our personnel feel supported, included, and empowered.

Role Responsibilities

We seek individuals who are eager to learn, possess an inquisitive mindset, and approach problem-solving logically. You must be self-motivated and ready to engage in both practical and theoretical studies. This 5-year apprenticeship program requires your commitment to achieving a Level 6 degree qualification. If this resonates with you, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.

The Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) comprises various government and industry entities that form part of the Ministry of Defence, sustaining the UK's nuclear deterrent. This includes the organizations, programs, and personnel within government and industry that contribute to the UK's nuclear capabilities.

Course Details

The Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Level 6 Professional Degree (BEng) Apprenticeship emphasizes the Safety pathway within the Engineering function, incorporating elements of Nuclear competencies. The course is delivered by The University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Off-the-job learning will occur on a block release basis, requiring residency at the University for approximately three and a half months each year. Typically, these learning blocks consist of 5 to 10 working days distributed throughout the academic year. The first block will be longer than usual, with specific dates confirmed during the onboarding process. For further details, please refer to the attached candidate pack. The university course link is available below:

This program is recognized and accredited by the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE). You will be registered as student members of the IExpE during your apprenticeship, and upon completion, you will achieve professional registration with IExpE.

Candidate Profile

As an Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) Safety Case apprentice, your responsibilities will include coursework supporting your BEng Degree qualification, funded by the MOD, and on-the-job training as part of your professional development. Collaborating with seasoned professionals in a high-hazard engineering environment will enable you to cultivate the technical skills and competencies necessary for your career. As you progress, you will have the opportunity to develop the following skills:

  • Support projects led by our team of safety professionals during work-based placements across the UK.
  • Draft and analyze technical documentation.
  • Participate in various site visits, conferences, and events.
  • Acquire knowledge and demonstrate the skills and behaviors essential for the safety pathway.

  • 2 A Levels (Two Scottish Highers) at Grade C or above, with desired subjects being any STEM or technology-based subject.
