Role Overview

Reporting to the Lead Underwriting Counsel, the successful applicant will provide comprehensive legal support to the organization, particularly in negotiating and executing a diverse array of bespoke and structured (re)insurance transactions, especially in the evolving domain of insurance and capital markets integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with underwriting teams and other relevant departments on the structuring, negotiation, documentation, and execution of various bespoke and structured (re)insurance transactions, including significant risk transfer and regulatory capital relief transactions (both funded and unfunded), structured credit, and asset-backed non-payment insurance across multiple asset classes.
  • Ensure that all transaction documentation is precise and aligns with commercial objectives and risk appetites.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining robust transaction processes to identify and mitigate all legal, accounting, regulatory, and tax risks, liaising with other functions as necessary.
  • Oversee external legal counsel for specific transactions, ensuring that the advice and support received are appropriate, timely, and budget-conscious.
  • Contribute to the development of legal knowledge and its dissemination across the organization, including attending relevant external events and providing internal training.
  • Support the broader responsibilities of the legal team, particularly regarding intra-group arrangements, various commercial contracts, binding authority agreements, and other distribution arrangements.
  • Provide concise and regular updates to senior management regarding ongoing transactions.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with relevant teams and functions across the organization to ensure operational effectiveness.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Solicitor qualified in England & Wales or a similar jurisdiction.
  • Proven experience as an insurance attorney (preferably with some background in (re)insurance underwriting transactions) gained in either private practice or an in-house financial services setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with individuals at all levels of seniority.
  • Strong sense of personal accountability and self-motivation, capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to influence and effectively share knowledge while maintaining awareness of broader commercial objectives and dynamics.
  • Proficient in managing workload, planning, prioritizing, and meeting tight deadlines while ensuring high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced work environment.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word and Excel) and adept in using Adobe Acrobat.
  • Willingness to work outside of standard hours when business needs arise.
