Job Summary

HSB is seeking a highly skilled Structural Design Engineer to provide technical support to our surveying teams and guidance to clients on proposed designs, with a focus on substructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments of structural designs for various building types, with a particular emphasis on foundation design, including reviews from concept to detailed drawings and calculations.
  • Review drawings, calculations, and technical information to mitigate risk related to foundation design.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, and stakeholders on technical matters, ensuring adherence to standards and procedures.
  • Provide technical advice on claims and undertake site inspections to assess causes and identify remedial works.
  • Offer guidance to the Marketing and Underwriting Departments on technical areas to inform team members when dealing with potential clients.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably required.

Requirements

  • Qualified Engineer (CEng. MIStructE, or similar) and a minimum degree (BEng/BSc/MEng) in Geotechnical/Civil/Structural or related discipline.
  • Essential foundation design experience in pile design, raft foundation design, ground improvement techniques.
  • Post-qualification experience is essential.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of Structural Engineering principles applicable to Building Regulations, Eurocode, British Standards, and other relevant construction standards.
  • Technical expertise in geotechnical engineering with a demonstrable understanding of underlying principles.
  • Basic understanding of general insurance principles and terminology desirable.
  • Ability to undertake site inspections to assess compliance with approved design, Technical Manual, Codes of Practice.
  • Commercial awareness and ability to work as part of a team, as well as individually.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage own workload within agreed parameters.
  • Demonstrable ability to use own initiative.
  • Ability to motivate self and influence others, manage, mentor, and develop supporting professional staff.
  • Ability to learn and expand knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills and flexibility in personal approach.
  • Good report-writing skills.
  • Full driving license and access to a car for business use is essential.
