Cost Estimator - Job Overview

The main aim of this role is to deliver expert estimating services for prospective business ventures. By adopting a structured estimating methodology, the intention is to secure future projects competitively while considering identified risks and potential rewards. Key duties encompass:

  • Assessing manufacturing and on-site installation tasks, which include both in-house and subcontracted work.
  • Creating Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and procurement timelines for the estimating phase.
  • Evaluating Cost Risk Registers and managing uncertainties in estimates.
  • Working closely with internal review teams to adhere to tender submission timelines.
  • Executing estimating tasks within the sanctioned Bid Costs.
  • Providing precise updates on estimating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and progress.
  • Fostering strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Implementing optimal estimating practices and protocols.

Qualifications / Experience Required / Personal Attributes

Qualifications:

  • Full Craft City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 / B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing within the Nuclear, Defence, or Heavy Engineering sectors.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in manufacturing estimation (preferred).

Competencies:

  • Proficient understanding of Engineering Drawings, Specifications, and Contract Documentation.
  • Knowledge of fabrication, machining, and assembly processes.
  • Ability to identify 'Norms' for fabrication, machining, and assembly.
  • Experience in managing project risks within estimates.
  • Proficient in developing written procedures and processes.
  • Skilled in IT Systems, including Microsoft Office.

  • Commercial insight and adherence to budgets/timelines.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Professional representation of the organization to clients and stakeholders.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively within a team.
