Role Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Sustainability Lead to join our team. Reporting directly to the Head of Sustainability, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our sustainability agenda with the backing of our Executive team and Board of Trustees. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the implementation of sustainability initiatives aligned with our Sustainability Policy, collaborating with colleagues to create procedural guidelines, action plans, and project delivery aimed at achieving our sustainability objectives:

- Achieving carbon neutrality in scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030

- Transitioning to a zero waste operation by 2030

- Sourcing deforestation-free commodities across all primary supply chains

- Ensuring a net gain for UK biodiversity, with at least 30% of owned land managed for biodiversity by 2030

  • Designing, managing, and promoting environmental sustainability initiatives throughout the organization. This encompasses carbon management, energy efficiency, waste management improvements, sustainable procurement practices, and identifying external funding opportunities.
  • Providing expert technical guidance to integrate sustainability across all organizational activities, enhancing our sustainability performance through stakeholder engagement and communication.
  • Delivering accurate sustainability data to support established targets and comply with external reporting standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a comprehensive program to embed environmental sustainability within the organization, ensuring senior management support. This includes training and engaging staff on sustainability topics through inductions, development programs, awareness events, and promotional campaigns to foster a culture of sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Sustainability Steering Group and Sustainability Target Leads to coordinate sustainability activities across the organization. This will involve preparing presentations to update on progress, discuss challenges and opportunities, and assist in producing reports for the Board of Trustees.
  • In partnership with sustainability target leads, manage a structured approach to advance work on sustainability targets through Delivery Groups, establishing relationships, developing procedures, and creating action plans to meet sustainability goals and comply with regulations.
  • Work alongside a Sustainability Officer to implement and drive sustainability initiatives, focusing on carbon management, energy efficiency, waste management improvements, and sustainable procurement through both physical and behavioral interventions.
  • Identify and secure external funding to support sustainability targets, managing the sustainability budget and overseeing corporate partnerships.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on sustainability, advising on best practices and supporting public affairs in developing policy statements and consultation responses.
  • Collaborate with the business reporting team to ensure accurate data collection for regulatory and organizational reporting, including carbon emissions, energy usage, waste management, and procurement data.

Package Overview

  • Experience in data management and reporting for sustainability metrics.
  • Leadership experience, including managing teams and budgets.
  • Membership in a recognized professional body related to sustainability is a plus.
