Technical Equipment Specialist (Workshop)

Position Overview
Salary: £30,000 to £32,982 per annum

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of workshop technicians responsible for repairing instrumentation and laboratory apparatus, controlled environment cabinets, fixed plant equipment, portable monitoring devices, and environmental control systems.

The role demands effective workload planning, fault diagnosis, sourcing of components, and executing repairs, along with conducting thorough assessments of necessary repairs.


  • Collaborate with the Workshop Manager to deliver planned preventative maintenance and servicing for the complete range of equipment.
  • Cultivate a working knowledge of the equipment and adopt a proactive approach to fault-finding, engaging with manufacturers on technical issues.
  • Conduct testing and calibration of electronic control units, sensors, and controlled environment cabinet systems, ensuring accuracy in line with required tolerances for research and educational activities.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of tolerances and methods to achieve and maintain precise control standards.
  • Engage with academic staff to assess their needs, translating experimental requirements into practical, cost-effective designs (e.g., design, fabrication, and modification of laboratory research and teaching equipment).
  • Utilize the department's job reporting system to maintain precise records of work performed, including time invested, materials utilized, and appropriate cost code allocations in accordance with budgetary guidelines.

The role may involve occasional travel to support additional facilities in the local area, utilizing company transportation for distances up to 20 miles.

Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate should possess a formal qualification at a minimum of NVQ/ONC/HNC/HND level or an equivalent relevant qualification, along with related experience in a practical technical or fault-finding role.


  • A minimum of 18 months of relevant mechanical, electrical, or electronic experience in a repair and maintenance environment, including servicing, fault diagnosis, and equipment maintenance.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build rapport with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • A solid foundation of generic technical and engineering skills, coupled with a genuine interest in fault-finding and equipment repair.
