The primary objective of this role is to oversee the Gardens & Grounds Team, managing a Grade //* listed parkland, along with four formal gardens, woodland areas, farmland, and estate woodlands.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct research, strategize, and collaborate with team members to enhance existing gardens and initiate a new kitchen garden project, focusing on planting, operational strategies, and community outreach.
- Lead initiatives for volunteer engagement and community involvement within the gardens and grounds.
- Provide expert support in Gardens and Grounds management, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations, training, project management, and maintenance programs.
- Optimize contractor utilization for cost efficiency and ensure proper care of equipment to prolong its lifespan.
- Investigate the historical context of the Gardens & Grounds to inform ongoing work, in collaboration with the Head Curator.
- Work closely with the Strategic Programmes Manager and other stakeholders to plan and execute the new Kitchen Garden.
- Collaborate with the Audience Development Manager to design and implement a comprehensive program of learning, community engagement, and volunteer activities to maximize public benefit.
- Ensure a high-quality visitor experience in the Kitchen Garden and Gardens through organized tours and activities.
- Identify and manage outdoor risks, including tree safety, plant health, biosecurity, and environmental concerns.
- Address potential hazards and incidents to ensure safety for employees, volunteers, contractors, and visitors.
- Lead and manage the Gardens & Grounds team, setting clear objectives, providing ongoing feedback, and conducting annual performance evaluations.
- Identify training needs and foster open communication within the team.
Applicants should possess:
- A minimum Level 3 Horticultural Qualification or a relevant degree.
- Extensive knowledge of plant and garden history.
- Strong understanding of woodland management.
- Familiarity with the complexities of working in a heritage environment with significant public interaction.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and legal compliance.
- Experience with land and woodland management grant schemes.
- 3-5 years of experience managing substantial gardens, preferably in a heritage context.
- Experience in planning and managing new garden projects, including budgeting and operational setup.
- Experience in propagation and cultivation of fruits and vegetables.
- Experience in managing woodland and parkland, ideally in listed environments.
- A passion for working with volunteers and community groups.
- A commitment to providing an exceptional visitor experience in outdoor spaces.
- Experience with grant schemes related to woodland and land management.
- Strong skills as a plantsman and woodland landscape manager.
- A pragmatic and commercially aware approach to project management.
- Effective performance management skills, with the ability to coach team members.
- Excellent relationship-building and negotiation abilities.
