Team Overview: The Nuclear Physics Package (NPP) Group is responsible for the design, construction, testing, and validation of the UK's nuclear deterrent, ensuring the Continuous at Sea Deterrent through innovative scientific and computational techniques.

We leverage our nuclear expertise to deliver creative solutions that aid the UK's nuclear threat reduction initiatives.

Current Opportunities: Due to an uptick in workload, we are actively seeking multiple engineering professionals.

Product Design Team: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide inventive NPP design solutions addressing a range of unique engineering challenges, from initial concept through to validation, while offering ongoing engineering support for existing and future NPP systems.

Hydrodynamic Trials: Engage in the design, construction, and execution of exceptional engineering tests and trials that underpin the innovative science and computational methods validating the safety and efficacy of the UK's Nuclear Deterrent.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Translate customer requirements into effective engineering solutions.
  • Lead the development of conceptual designs, detailed designs, manufacturing specifications, product specifications, operational documentation, and validation evidence for mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of high-quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Engage with stakeholders across the organization to advance design initiatives, ensuring adherence to safety, security, and performance standards with input from subject matter experts.
  • Assist in planning future design activities.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of tasks to achieve specific objectives on schedule, demonstrating control over cost and quality.
  • Understand the hazards and associated risks of work conducted and, when necessary, safely operate specialized equipment.
  • Participate in scoping, planning, and estimating future activities.
  • Organize personal training and development with guidance from a professional mentor.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a Degree, HND/HNC, or an equivalent vocational qualification in an engineering discipline, with or working towards professional registration.

Experience: A proven history of driving delivery, performance, and continuous improvement is essential.

Business Acumen: Demonstrates an understanding of financial and business requirements.

Desirable Skills: Familiarity with any of the following would be beneficial, though not essential as role-specific training will be provided:

  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), including configuration management and quality control.
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems.
  • Engineering drafting to BS8888 with GD&T.
  • Substantiating engineering designs for safety and performance.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and its limitations.
  • Machine tools and manufacturing processes.
  • Static and dynamic environmental testing.
  • Material selection and testing.
