Role Summary:
The Mechanical Cost Estimator will engage in various frameworks within the Water sector, focusing on the remaining AMP7 projects and initiating AMP8 early works. The estimating team is expanding to accommodate the anticipated increase in project volume over the next five years, with project values ranging from £5 million to over £100 million.
The successful candidate will be tasked with analyzing Project Content Documents (PCD) and the proposed scope of work to aid in the development of detailed Bottom-up estimates for the Mechanical and Electrical components of the projects. Additionally, a Top-Down review will be conducted using cost curves and schedules of rates to support negotiations on the proposed Target Price.
This position is primarily home-based, with travel as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Join the estimating team and take charge of preparing mechanical estimates.
- Develop detailed scopes from technical drawings, specifications, and PCDs outlining the project scope.
- Identify discrepancies or omissions in the PCD scope.
- Compile material and subcontractor requirements for sourcing and pricing.
- Conduct technical and commercial evaluations of material and subcontractor bids to ensure comprehensive pricing.
- Prepare analytical estimates, focusing on detailed assessments of Mechanical and Electrical packages.
- Assist in identifying risks and pricing those risks throughout the bidding process.
- Participate in site visits as needed during the tender phase.
- Contribute to the creation of the M&E "Tender Book" to compile and present the mechanical estimate.
- Generate Top-Down Estimates using agreed-upon schedules of rates and cost curves for benchmarking during the review process.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Chartered status is preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Mechanical Estimator with a major mechanical/electrical contractor in the water sector.
- Proven experience in pricing medium to large-scale mechanical and electrical engineering projects.
- Essential experience in wastewater/sewerage treatment and process engineering.
- Experience in clean water projects is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Civil Engineering Methods of Measurement.
- Customer-oriented, transparent, environmentally conscious, team-oriented, and accountable.
- Strong communication skills and a proactive approach.
- Commercially aware with a solid understanding of various Contract Forms.
- Good technical knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, with the ability to propose alternative solutions. Must be numerate, precise, and self-verifying.
- Familiarity with CCS 'Candy' Estimating system is a plus, though training will be provided.
- A valid driving license is required.
