The Development Underwriter will play a pivotal role in transforming our partnerships with broker portfolios by fostering responsive, adaptable, and collaborative relationships. The focus will be on cultivating and delivering profitable growth across both new and existing business within key markets.

This role requires travel within the designated area, as it involves direct engagement with brokers alongside technical underwriting responsibilities. While aligned with the Birmingham branch, the primary focus will be on collaborating with brokers throughout the Midlands region. Regular travel to the Birmingham branch will be expected for collaboration with the broader team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the representative of AXA in presenting propositions for larger Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate risks, leveraging industry knowledge and technical underwriting expertise, tailored to the complexity of each case.
  • Collaborate with Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, terms, and pricing that distinguish AXA in meeting customer requirements.
  • Proactively cultivate a strong pipeline of qualified growth opportunities in the Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate sectors, utilizing both client and broker relationships, ensuring effective management and realization of the pipeline.
  • Lead and fully integrate the large case management process for both new and existing business.
  • Develop and nurture collaborative relationships with brokers, and occasionally clients, across the region, taking full ownership of generating, placing, and retaining profitable commercial business from self-sourced opportunities.
  • Underwrite profitable new and existing business in accordance with AXA's established underwriting controls and practices, serving as a referral point within the branch.
  • Establish and maintain a quality distribution strategy and communication plan with key influential brokers to ensure financial KPIs are met.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the performance metrics of the region's portfolio (COR, Rate, Retention, Hot Spot trades, profit drivers, and underwriting circular).
  • Support other regions as appropriate, aligned with areas of underwriting, trade segments, or industry expertise.

Your Profile:

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in technical underwriting with demonstrable experience in two or more mid-market classes.
  • DIP Qualified or equivalent, with a proven track record in underwriting Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate business.
  • History of securing and retaining large-scale and complex business through developed senior broker and customer relationships.
  • Evidence of previous technical and sales experience, extending to effective pipeline management.
  • Strong insight development and management of customer and broker portfolios.
  • Ability to make a personal impact and influence, with strong negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

As a prerequisite for this role, candidates must be eligible and authorized to work in the United Kingdom.

This position is classified as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime, which entails that, in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will undergo background screening every four years, with an annual declaration in interim years.
