Senior Orthopaedic Registrar

Wakefield, Wakefield, United Kingdom The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a dedicated and enthusiastic medical professional to join our esteemed department at a pivotal moment in our Trust's evolution. The department fosters a nurturing and supportive atmosphere conducive to professional growth, with ample opportunities to specialize in various fields.

This role is situated within the Trauma & Orthopaedics division, specifically designed for a senior orthopaedic trainee (ideally post CCT) to engage for a duration of 12 months. This position is tailored as a developmental opportunity for registrars who are preferably post CCT, preparing for future consultant roles.

Although this position is not formally recognized for training by the Postgraduate Dean, the responsibilities and shift patterns align closely with those of recognized training posts, and study leave will be encouraged on a comparable basis to that which applies to educationally approved SHOs. The on-call commitment will follow a 1:12 schedule.

Numerous audits and research initiatives are ready for execution and submission during the tenure. Candidates will receive support in the provision and delivery of Foot & Ankle education, including access to cutting-edge simulation technology.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with four foot & ankle consultants and actively participate in the broader team’s activities. Responsibilities will include:

  • Engagement in multidisciplinary team (MDT) activities.
  • Participation in the regional ankle arthroplasty network.
  • Involvement in diabetic and neuropathic foot clinics.
  • Contribution to the Foot & Ankle soft tissue (FAST) service and subspecialty fracture clinics.

The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the department's research endeavors and develop an independent research or audit project within the foot and ankle unit for presentation or publication.

The surgical case mix encompasses all facets of forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot reconstruction, including soft tissue, sports, and chondral repair techniques, as well as arthroscopic and minimally invasive methods. Ankle arthroplasty is also included. It is anticipated that the fellow will maintain a surgical logbook and participate in progress assessments.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Management of patients with both acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases.
  • Referral of patients to other specialties as necessary.
  • Conducting outpatient activities and clinics.
  • Active involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multidisciplinary teams and meetings.
  • Participation in relevant administrative duties.
  • Teaching and supervising junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate.
  • Engagement in audit and clinical governance, including service improvement initiatives.
