Job Overview

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for delivering high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients. Ensuring the highest standards of care are met, the post holder will work to provide effective and compassionate care to patients and their families/carers while on the ward.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support the ward manager in providing effective clinical leadership to ensure patient safety and high-quality care.
  • Assist the ward manager in the effective management of infection prevention and control within the ward area.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and external partners to ensure seamless care delivery.
  • Manage a small team of nurses, mentoring and assessing their skills, and responsible for their annual appraisals.
  • Work within allocated resources and assist in the management of the budget.
  • Act as a role model and expert practitioner, undertaking delegated responsibilities in the absence of the ward manager.
  • Manage day-to-day ward activities to ensure efficient flow and reduce length of stay, maintaining quality of care throughout the 24-hour period.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary communication links within the ward and department, ensuring effective collaboration.
  • Adhere to NMC guidelines on documentation, accountability, and record-keeping.
  • Ensure effective shift handovers, identifying and challenging unprofessional comments about patients.
  • Participate in ward rounds, presenting concise information on patient situations and conditions.
  • Manage patient discharge and complex case conferences, including end-of-life care.
  • Support families and carers in understanding medical conditions.
  • Recognize poor standards of care and report to appropriate personnel.
Person Specification
  • Substantial acute surgical experience.
  • Care of the Critically Ill Adult Module.
  • Experience in supervising/mentoring others.
  • Evidence of undertaking own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
  • Evidence of championing diversity in previous roles.
