In light of the ongoing expansion and development of our 12-acre nursery, we are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and dedicated horticultural professional to manage the nursery and its growing team.
This position is ideal for a motivated individual with a passion for horticulture, who has experience in nursery or garden center operations, team management, and is organized and efficient with their time. You will play a crucial role in supporting the business's growth and success while enhancing the production nursery for wholesale.
The focus of the organization is to produce high-quality retail stock for garden centers and domestic landscapers, as well as in-house sales for their landscaping division.
Key Responsibilities as a Plant Nursery Operations Supervisor:- A minimum of 3 years of experience in nursery or garden center operations, preferably in production for retail sales, though this is not mandatory.
- A genuine passion for plants, with a willingness to work outdoors year-round in various weather conditions, and readiness to engage in diverse tasks as the site evolves.
- Ability to work independently as well as manage a small, growing team of currently six staff members.
- Understanding the significance of plant health and quality, ensuring the production of top-notch retail plants with quality as a primary focus.
- Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate initiative.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with the team and report to the Group Purchasing Manager.
- A hands-on approach that sets a positive example for the team, showcasing confidence and enthusiasm.
- Ability to lead by example and efficiently delegate tasks.
Desirable Qualifications:
RHS Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture
FLT license
PA1 and PA6 spraying licenses
Role Involvement:
- Engagement in various responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Overseeing production for retail, landscaping, and wholesale customers, including developing production plans.
- Managing the small but expanding team in all nursery operations, including supporting yard activities and handling incoming and outgoing deliveries.
- Leading the team to ensure high levels of product knowledge and efficient performance in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Regularly inspecting stock to ensure optimal quality, with meticulous attention to detail, and implementing pest and disease control measures and appropriate fertilization schedules as needed.
- Supervising incoming stock and outgoing orders to maintain high standards of quality and service.
- Controlling and maintaining the irrigation system and overseeing general nursery maintenance.
- Managing staff schedules, working hours, absences, and holiday requests.
- Driving sales and meeting established budgets while controlling expenses and minimizing waste.
- Regularly liaising with customers to discuss production plans, orders, and contract grows.
- Seeking new business opportunities and customers.
- Adhering to plant health protocols and procedures.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary range: £35,000 - £45,000 per year
Standard working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, with additional hours as required by the business
Permanent, full-time position
