An exciting opportunity has emerged for the position of Senior Podiatrist specializing in Musculoskeletal Services. This role offers the chance to enhance an established podiatry service focused on musculoskeletal conditions, implement innovative practices, and strengthen collaborative relationships within the healthcare community.

You will be part of a dynamic and experienced team of podiatrists primarily operating in community settings.

Key Responsibilities

To deliver a comprehensive and effective foot health service for the local population.

This position involves enhancing collaborative efforts across the healthcare network, transforming the operational framework of the musculoskeletal service.

Responsibilities will include supporting fellow podiatrists with their treatment strategies and serving as a clinical resource.

The role encompasses line management of podiatry staff and close collaboration with other podiatry leaders. This includes participation in ongoing projects and assisting the Podiatry Clinical Lead with daily service operations. The successful candidate will also maintain a clinical caseload, providing care in both clinic and home visit settings.

We encourage applications from podiatrists who may not have prior experience at a senior level but are eager to advance their careers and are passionate about enhancing patient care. Training and support for line management will be provided.

Clinical Responsibilities

To serve as a clinical expert and lead for biomechanics within the podiatry service, ensuring a coordinated and effective podiatry service is available throughout the region and to general practices.

Provide specialized diagnostic assessments, treatments, and advice, including gait analysis and orthotic provision to enhance patient mobility and independence while preventing disability.

To facilitate the training of podiatry students, assist colleagues in maintaining and developing their clinical competencies in biomechanics, and educate other healthcare professionals on the significance of biomechanics.

Clinical Duties

To collaborate as a vital member of the podiatry team to deliver high-quality and responsive podiatric care programs to patients with high-risk needs.

To provide early interventions whenever feasible to sustain mobility and independence, and to avert disability.

To utilize advanced orthopedic assessments, diagnose, develop specialized treatment plans, and deliver effective podiatric treatments based on clinical needs and evidence-based practices. This primarily involves patients with complex medical conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, vascular insufficiencies, physical disabilities, children, sports injuries, and other vulnerable populations.

To manage a highly complex and specialized caseload, implementing and coordinating intricate treatment regimens that involve the assessment, prescription, manufacture, and evaluation of various orthotic devices, advanced casting techniques, and management programs.

To adhere to a philosophy of care emphasizing patient empowerment and independence by providing education and information to assist patients in managing their foot health needs, including footwear guidance.

To manufacture functional and accommodative orthotic devices and evaluate all produced and purchased devices using outcome measurements.

To work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including consultants, general practitioners, orthotists, and allied health professionals, while serving as a resource for patients, caregivers, and other healthcare providers.

To be responsible for a highly complex and specialized caseload, implementing and coordinating comprehensive treatment regimens for the holistic management of at-risk feet.

To demonstrate proficiency in comprehensive neurological and vascular assessments, wound debridement, advanced pathology, and gait analysis.

To conduct diagnostic procedures effectively using appropriate equipment, such as Doppler ultrasound, and to request diagnostic tests like X-rays and MRI scans, competently interpreting, recording, acting on, and reporting results.

To ensure adherence to best practices when faced with challenging working conditions, maintaining infection control standards in the presence of malodorous wounds, ulcerations, and unsanitary environments.

To provide services across various locations, including patient homes, clinics, general practices, and hospitals, often working in isolation.

To manage clinical risks within your patient caseload, seeking guidance as necessary.

To obtain informed consent prior to initiating treatment plans.

To ensure all patients are thoroughly assessed before referring to junior staff or assistants.

The post holder will conduct comprehensive medical assessments to determine the suitability for local anesthesia and minor surgical procedures.

To perform specialized surgical interventions for complex nail pathologies, such as nail avulsions and chemical destruction of the nail matrix under local anesthesia.

To manage a domiciliary caseload within a designated area, including appointment scheduling and effective clinical time management.

To maintain clear, comprehensive, and accurate records, updating patient medical histories, evaluating progress, and collaborating with clients to develop their treatment plans as needed.

To educate and assess colleagues, students, newly qualified podiatrists, and podiatry assistants.
