Purpose of the Role

As a Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprentice on our Cheshire West and Chester contract, you will be an integral part of a team responsible for carrying out essential highway maintenance duties. Your responsibilities will encompass various tasks such as patching, traffic management, gully emptying, soft estate upkeep, street furniture repair, and winter maintenance operations.

This apprenticeship provides valuable on-the-job training alongside structured classroom learning at college. You will work towards achieving a Level 2 in Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative qualification.

Main Responsibilities
  • Effectively plan and execute repairs to potholes, pavements, kerbs, and new road surfaces on both rural and urban roads.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading, interpreting, and adhering to drawings, specifications, and highway information. This includes understanding safety barriers, cones, traffic flow, and designated safety zones when working on highways.
  • Utilize underground cable locators to identify buried utilities such as water, gas, sewer lines, or other services. Once identified, carefully excavate by hand around the line to prevent damage and disruption to these essential services.
  • Adhere to strict safe working practices for moving, storing, lifting, and handling resources.
  • Prepare and operate powered tools, pedestrian plant machinery, or equipment used on roads. This may include generators, pumps, pedestrian-operated plant (e.g., pushed roller), mixers, compressors, and self-powered tools (pneumatic drill).
