About the Position

This role presents a unique opportunity within the Greater London Authority to spearhead collaboration with enterprises across key sectors in London, ensuring that skills development aligns with their present and future workforce requirements while facilitating access to qualified talent.

The Skills and Employment unit is in search of a dedicated Senior Business Engagement Strategist to implement a comprehensive business engagement initiative supporting various skills and employment programs, including the Mayor's Skills Academies, Skills Bootcamps for Londoners, and the innovative London Union Learn initiatives aimed at assisting businesses with their skills and recruitment challenges.

The successful candidate will be tasked with executing business and strategic partner engagement activities that bolster the objectives of existing programs, leveraging industry insights to shape the strategic direction of the Mayor's skills initiatives.

We are looking for a proactive individual who excels at identifying opportunities for business engagement to enhance the development and effectiveness of our programs, ultimately maximizing the number of Londoners benefiting from the Mayor's investment in employment pathways.

Proven experience in delivering employer engagement initiatives is essential, and achieving tangible results will be critical in this position. We seek a confident communicator capable of fostering relationships with employers, clarifying the support available through our programs, and providing guidance to commissioned training providers on their engagement strategies.

About the Team

The Skills and Employment Unit is responsible for collaborating with external partners to formulate skills and employment strategies for London, as well as managing the Adult Skills Budget, UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and programs such as the Mayor's Skills Academies, Skills Bootcamps for Londoners, and Skills Capital investment initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across a broad spectrum of local and regional employers and key stakeholders to enhance engagement and drive job outcomes across relevant programs.
  • Manage the complete customer journey for a portfolio of employers to identify skills needs and facilitate partnerships with training providers for the creation of industry-driven training courses.
  • Strengthen local partnerships and connections among employers, providers, boroughs, industry representative bodies, and other stakeholders, ensuring integration with other initiatives for effective cross-referrals.
  • Collaborate closely with employers and industry representatives to gather data and insights that deepen understanding of skills requirements across London's key sectors.
  • Expand the GLA's business relationships, particularly within priority sectors of London's economy, through proactive engagement and collaborative projects.
  • Communicate relevant and timely industry insights to inform the strategic and operational delivery of the skills and employment unit's programs.
  • Lead the planning and execution of high-profile stakeholder events to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Analyze pertinent industry data and intelligence, providing recommendations to enhance the development, delivery, and sustainability of employer-focused programs.
  • Engage with officers across the GLA and GLA Group to ensure a cohesive approach to delivering skills and employment programs throughout London.
  • Collaborate with the GLA's Press team to showcase the impact of employer-focused programs on local businesses, Londoners, and the economy through comprehensive PR coverage.
  • Represent the GLA and its skills and employment programs at relevant internal and external meetings.
  • Promote equality of opportunity and the diverse needs and aspirations of London's communities among businesses and stakeholders.

Candidate Profile

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience collaborating with both private and public sectors, with a strong understanding of their differing perspectives and values.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate and manage influential relationships with a diverse range of senior stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
  • A solid understanding of UK skills and business policy.
  • Familiarity with industry intelligence and evidence of leveraging strategic insights to drive the delivery of high-profile, public-facing, or corporate projects.
  • Experience in delivering communications and event activities for a diverse audience, including businesses.
