Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom NHS Scotland Full time

NHS Scotland is dedicated to promoting equality and diversity within our workforce, striving to eliminate any form of unlawful discrimination. Our goal is to ensure that our workforce is genuinely representative and that every employee feels valued and empowered to perform at their best. Therefore, NHS Scotland encourages applications from all segments of society.

Department of Medical Physics (location to be determined with the successful candidate)

Position: Clinical Engineer (Clinical Engineering / Medical Equipment Management)

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time (37 hours/week): 1 Position Available.

Salary Scale: Band 7 or Band 7 Annex 21 (based on experience)

We invite applications for the role of Clinical Engineer within the Clinical Engineering/Medical Equipment Management (MEM) Service at NHS Lothian. This is a remarkable opportunity to secure a new full-time position within our service.

The Department of Medical Physics is tasked with the safe integration of new medical device technologies into the Health Board, as well as the ongoing support and maintenance of medical devices throughout their entire lifecycle.

The successful candidate will lead and engage in projects aimed at introducing innovative technologies into the Board, often involving clinical trials of novel devices, which may not yet be CE/UKCA marked and are at earlier stages of development. A key responsibility will be to conduct timely reviews and risk assessments of Research and Development studies that require Clinical Engineering approval before initiation. Additionally, the postholder will manage a portfolio of routine medical equipment replacement projects and contribute to long-term Clinical Engineering quality enhancement initiatives.

There will be opportunities to collaborate closely with colleagues in Higher Education institutions that are developing a variety of innovative devices, with whom the Health Board has established long-term partnerships.

With a strong emphasis on patient safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness, you will join a passionate multidisciplinary team delivering clinical engineering services across the Health Board. We seek an enthusiastic, diligent, and capable individual who is self-motivated, possesses excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and adopts a flexible and systematic approach. The ideal candidate will either hold HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist or be on track to complete their training and join the register within 12 months of starting employment.

As part of the Clinical Engineering/MEM team, your work will support various clinical specialties, delivering top-tier healthcare across multiple acute hospital sites and within the local healthcare community. You will be required to work at various hospital locations, with your base determined in consultation with the Head of Service. There will also be opportunities for remote work.

NHS Lothian employs approximately 26,000 staff and serves a population of around 910,000 across a region of about 660 square miles, which includes diverse landscapes from the vibrant city to picturesque countryside and coastline.

For further details regarding the role, including key responsibilities and required skills/experience, please refer to the job description and person specification. As this is a new role, there will be opportunities to review and refine the job description within the first year of appointment.

Applications are welcomed from candidates who may be appointed directly onto Band 7 (with up to 12 months to fully meet the essential requirements in the person specification) or onto Band 7 Annex 21 if they require additional time to meet the person specification.

NHS Scotland is transitioning to a full-time working week of 37 hours from 1 April 2024, with no change in pay. This change will also apply pro rata for part-time staff. This advertisement and any subsequent employment offer/contract will reflect the new working hours. However, not all service areas may implement the 37-hour workweek immediately, and you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week temporarily, for which you will be compensated until the service adjusts its rosters or working patterns.
