Job Overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our esteemed team. Our Department of Gastroenterology provides comprehensive services to the county of Shropshire and Mid Wales, with a team of 8 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 1 Consultant Hepatologist working across both hospital sites.

Main Responsibilities

As a Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing high-quality patient care, working independently and collaboratively with consultant staff.
  • Participating in the Gastroenterology on-call rota, ensuring seamless coverage and patient care.
  • Caring for patients with gastrointestinal complaints, delivering a mix of emergency and elective care.
  • Contributing to audit and governance, supporting the training of junior medical staff and other staffing groups.
  • Carrying out administrative duties in support of clinical commitments.
  • Being a core member of the Upper GI/Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT, driving multidisciplinary care.
  • Developing enhanced clinical skills, particularly in assessing and managing acutely ill patients.
  • Exhibiting excellent team-working skills, with a professional attitude and ability to work effectively in a multi-professional team.
  • Delivering clinical and quality targets, aligned with national and local priorities.
  • Following patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the primary provider of acute hospital services for approximately half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. Our catchment area spans picturesque regions, including the Cambrian Mountains, Newport, and the Black Country. Our main towns include Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Newport, Telford, and Wellington.

Job Plan and Responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, within 3 months of starting in post. The job plan will outline the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year, covering all aspects of professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities.

The job plan will be divided into three main categories:

  • Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care, including clinical activity, clinically related activity, and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
  • Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), including CPD, audit, teaching, and research, with a focus on supporting revalidation and Trust priorities.
  • Out-of-hours activity, including participation in an on-call rota primarily for GI bleeds, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 10.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment during a further diary exercise or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.
